Overview

The USB-ME-PGA/FAI-System is a complete system solution for in vivo recordings with microelectrode arrays, including lightweight miniature headstage amplifiers, and filter amplifiers with or without programmable gain to record from 64 up to 256 channels in real-time. Because the system consists of several devices, we call it “Stationary-ME-System”, as once it is set-up, it is not that convenient to move around.

To get startet, just connect your amplifier to a USB-ME-System (data acquisition box) and you can run your experiment on every desktop PC or notebook. It also enables you to make electrical activity audible in real-time.

Furthermore – by moving the analysis from the PC to the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) integrated in the USB-ME-System hardware, a real-time signal detection/feedback is possible. The real-time signal detection/feedback is an advantageous feature if you need fast and predictable reactions related to recorded analog signals without time delay.

And last but not least it is the only system in the world, that enables you to run four experiments simultaneously, but completely independently from each other.

Stationary ME-Systems

The Stationary-ME-System is a all-in-one solution for tethered in-vivo/ex-vivo recordings. With up to 256 channels, it is the ideal solution whenever you need to record from many electrodes.

The signal is picked up by an electrode array, which is connected to a miniature preamplifier. Here, the signal is amplified for the first time. Via a signal collector box the pre-amplfied data goes into the filter amplifier, which is available with programmable or fixed gain. From there, the amplified signal goes to the data acquisition, which is connected with one USB-cable to the computer, where the included data acquisition software MC_Rack analyses the data.

  • Electrode arrays

    The Stationary-ME-System can be operated with most commercially available probes.

    Multi Channel Systems offers flexible MEAs, made of polyimide foil. They are available with 24, 36 and 72 electrodes and can easily be connected to MCS preamplifiers.

    You can also use other electrode arrays. We recommend the use of probes from Neuronexus Technologies or ATLAS Neuroengineering.

    Probes with Omnetics connector can ca connected directly to the micro preamplifiers µPA16 and µPA32. For other probe connectors, you might need an adapter. We have a wide range of adapters available. If you do not find the one you need, please contact us. We will certainly find a solution that fits your needs.

  • Miniature preamplifiers

    The miniature preamplifiers receive the signal from the electrode array and provide the first amplification step (tenfold amplification).

    Multi Channel Systems offers miniature preamplifiers (MPA/µPA) with 2, 8, 16, and 32 channels, .

    All miniature preamplifiers have additional common ground and reference electrode inputs. The metal cases provide electrical shielding. Stable long-term recordings are ensured by the high input impedance.

  • Signal collector box

    The pre-amplifiers are plugged into this signal collector box. All this device does is transfering the data from several miniature pre-amplifiers to one 68-pin MCS standard output, from where the signal is send via one cable to the filter amplifier.

    Multi Channel Systems offers signal collector boxes for all miniature pre-amplifiers. Most of them also feature a BNC connector for TTL inputs for the blanking signal.

  • Filter amplifier

    Multi Channel Systems offers filter amplifiers with fixed gain (FA) or programmable gain (PGA).

    Both types of amplifiers are made according to your needs. You decide on bandwidth and gain, depending on your application. With the programmable gain amplifiers, you can adjust the gain via the included software.

  • Data acquisition

    The data acquisition of the USB-MEA-System is a complete plug-and-play data acquisition system based on signal processing technology. They are available with 64, 128 or 256 channels.

    Depending on the number of channels, you can connect one, two or four amplifiers at the same time running different experiments on each of them. Open the data acquisition and analysis software MC_Rack up to four times at once and control your amplifiers independently.

    The USB-ME-System has an integrated DSP (Digital Signal Processor) which makes real-time signal detection/feedback possible.

    This data acquisition device can record in vivo or in vitro – everything is possible from 64 up to 256 channels. You just need to connect the respective amplifier. Moreover, you can synchronize more than one USB-ME-System to record from an even higher number of channels.

  • Computer and software

    The last component of the system is the computer with the included software package MC_Rack. With daily lab work in mind, the program is set up like an instrument rack on a workbench, allowing you to combine virtual instruments (e.g. oscilloscope, filter, event detector, spike sorter, sound output, or signal-triggered TTL pulse) in any way you want. MC_Rack has been used many years in laboratories around the world and has proven to be a powerful, flexible and reliable software.

    MC_Rack can be used for online and offline analysis of your data. You can also export the data and analyze the data with Neuroexplorer, Matlab or your custom program.

    For standardized experiments, Multi Channel Systems offers the software package Cardio2D for analysis of cardiac cells, tissues, and whole organs.

    As a policy at Multi Channel Systems, updates of all software packages are available online and free of charge, so you are always up-to-date with recent developments.

  • Multi-fold systems for 128 or 256 channels

    The basic stationary ME-System has 64 channels. However, you can also create systems with 128 or 256 channels. In order to do so, you would just connect not only one, but two or four amplifiers to the data acquisition, which is available with 128 or 256 channels, too.

    For data analysis, you can open the MC_Rack software several times, one window per amplifier. Thereby, you can run up to 4 experiments simultaneously, but completely independently from each other.
