Description

μTongue is a microfluidics-based imaging platform designed for in vivo functional imaging of taste cells in the mouse tongue. The system consists of two main components:

(1) The mouse preparation board

(2) The μTongue Unit.

Utilized alongside with high-resolution cameras, it enables detailed visualization of tongue structures during experimentation. However, the true precision of μTongue is realized when paired with ALA’s Pressure Regulator (PR-10), VCPlus or Octaflow systems, and the Vacuum Waste Kit (VWK).

μTongue

One of μTongue’s most significant advantages is its ability to deliver multiple tastant solutions directly onto the tongue surface with precision. Controlled by sophisticated pressure regulators and microfluidic systems, it enables seamless switching between various taste stimuli within a single imaging session.

Moreover, μTongue integrates easily into standard lab setups, working perfectly alongside widely available microscopes and imaging systems.

μTongue Benefits:

    • Allows Multi-Tastant Testing In Vivo – Enables rapid switching between different taste stimuli for functional screening of taste buds in a single session.
    • Reduces Invasive Tissue Damage – Avoids the need for traditional sectioning or peeling, preserving the tongue’s natural architecture and function.

    • Compatible with Standard Lab Equipment – Integrates seamlessly with two-photon, confocal microscopes, and ALA’s microfluidic controllers.

    • Enables Live Imaging of Taste Buds – Supports real-time observation of taste cell activity directly on the living tongue.

    • Minimizes Motion and Optical Artifacts – Uses stable microfluidic flows and ratiometric imaging to reduce turbulence and optical distortions.

    • Preserves Natural Tongue Environment – Maintains physiological conditions such as blood circulation, nerve innervation, and tissue moisture critical for accurate taste research.
